What is Web Accessibility Tutor?

Web Accessibility Tutor results from a diploma thesis project at the TU Wien.

This digital platform is intended to help people understand web accessibility and allow web developers to learn essential accessibility implementation basics through tutorials.

Target Groups

  • Web developers
    are responsible for ensuring accessibility.
The provided web accessibility tutorials are intended to support web developers in actively implementing accessibility in their software products.

  • Visually impaired and blind persons
who rely on assistive technologies such as screen readers can benefit from the online tutorials provided, as their point of view can be better understood by sighted developers.

Tutorials

The tutorials provided teach the essential basics of web accessibility. Relevant success criteria of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are explained with examples. Poor and Good accessibility implementations are compared, and their differences are explained. The effects are also conveyed through corresponding screen reader outputs. This should help web developers understand what (negative) impact a specific program code has on screen reader users and contribute to raising awareness of why web accessibility is needed.

About the Author

Hello, my name is Wolfgang Bubich. I work professionally as a web accessibility tester and am internationally certified, according to IAAP CPACC (Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Compentencies). I am also in close contact with visually impaired and blind people. My experience shows numerous accessibility hurdles in the digital space, especially for people with visual impairments.
As a computer scientist, I would like to help developers understand web accessibility through this platform with special online tutorials - adapted to the needs of screen reader users. Ultimately, this should incentivize developers to consider web accessibility in their projects.
